Globalization, in my opinion, is a process in which the whole world is involved in. Involvement could be from multiple angles that include consumption, production, supporting, ect… Due to this definition, I can’t really make a decision if all globalization is bad or good because I know that both situations occur. It is good because it gets everyone involved and sometimes, it even allows everyone to have a voice. At the same time, people may be involved that don’t want to be or may not have a say in what is going on. Also, globalization erodes cultures in a sense that everything has moved to a more western way of living. This also causes an undefined line between nations and what considers a country to be individual. After lining out the pros and cons, I have found that the cons outweigh the pros and globalization for the most part is negative. This is because we hear big names like Nike and other corporations and think about all the negative aspects revolving that company; sweat shops, low wages, long hours, no rights ect… From there, we generalize all corporations and believe that they all run the same and therefore believe that globalization, in the end, has an overall negative effect on our world.

Assignment #5
The highway of tears is a highway where women and teen girls have gone missing; what is important to note about these women and girls is that they are mostly all aboriginals. This story hasn’t received a lot of attention because people don’t want to admit that even in a society with equal rights, people (in this case aboriginals) aren’t getting the attention and/or help they actually need. The story has been kept quiet because aboriginals still aren’t treated fairly and this is a perfect example; these aboriginal women and girls haven’t been found and there hasn’t been a huge effort to try to find them. This situation shows that even with equal rights and such, people are still treated unfairly and unjustly. Recently, nothing has been done to help the efforts with this case. It has been turned a blind eye on and left in the dark for the most part. Since more girls have gone missing, there has been more media in a sense that they have a website including everyone that has gone missing but I have not seen anything in the news or in the papers about these occurences.
Assignment #6
We watched a video today in class that described “The Man Box.” This idea of a man box is all the stereotypical things a guy should be doing or acting like. Some things included in the box are: 1)don’t cry 2) don’t act ‘girly’ 3) be strong and tough 4) be athletic 5) don’t show emotion ect… This man box effects socialization because it teaches men to treat women as an object from a very young age. Men and even boys at some ages are looked as superior to women. The box makes men feel like they can’t open up and let out their emotions. In relationships, this is not very good because the man never wants to let the woman know what’s going on in his life. This causes the woman to feel distant and left out of his life which can then lead to greater problems in the relationship. If a boy feels ‘crushed’ by the fact that he is told he plays football like a girl, then at a very young age we are teaching boys that women are weak and need to be sheltered. Not all girls are weak and not all boys are strong; both sexes need to be treated equally so there isn’t expectations on how men should act versus how women should act. To change how boys are socialized, we could make it more acceptable to show emotion at a younger age. Don’t treat 5-year-old boys like they are men, because 5 year olds will cry and should be taught that it is okay to cry. It should be looked at as a strength in men because you are actually comfortable with showing emotion and letting people into your life that could possibly make your situation better. In the end, boys and men are taught very different things than girls and women. This creates a huge inequality which can then lead to a lack of acceptance in society. This needs to change because men and women should be given equal rights and therefore should be taught and treated the same way.
Assignment #4
The phrase ‘our silence is our consent’ means that by saying nothing, we are implying that it is okay for something unwanted to happen. In a lot of situations, we stay quiet even if we may not agree with what is going on. Sometimes all it takes for something to stop is for someone to stand up and question if what one is doing is the right thing to do. In my life, there have been a number of moments that I could have stood up for someone and didn’t. One of my fondest memories was when I was in elementary school. We had a mentally challenged girl in our class and because no one would step up and even try to be her friend, different students from the class would be asked to socialize with her during a couple of lunch periods. Every day it rotated so she got the chance to be everyone’s friend and to meet different kinds of people. Once everyone took their turn to stay with her, no one would go back and spend time with her because they were too afraid of what others would say. She felt really left out and not part of our class and all she wanted was someone to eat lunch with her. If I were to go back to elementary school I would try and make it part of my routine to talk with her every lunch and/or recess and just interact with her on a daily basis. I would also try to encourage others to talk and interact with her because although we are making her feel good about herself, she would be impacting our lives in a positive manner.

Because I am one of the students going to Belize… I chose to look at the Human rights beening denied there…. So baisically what was happening in Belize during January and April were riots because the public was angry at the poor economy. The government wanted to change the Constitution in order to accept the jurisdiction of the Caribbean Court of Justice as the final court of appeal which would then replace the Privy Council. The police abuse the public by torture, ill-treatment and arbitrary detention. The UN Committee on Rights of the Child were concerned about the abuse of children; that included corporal punishment, discrimination against vulnerable groups of children, children without birth registration and nationality lack of non-registered children to services like education and health, and also the violent environment the many children live in. Having said all of that, the UN did say that the goverenment had made some effort to try and fix the situation.
Blog Assignment #2!
1) When I first saw the Wikipedia web address, I didn’t know if I could trust it completely considering anyone and everyone can write on these pages. Then I saw the ‘org’ at the end of the second web address and I thought that would be legitimate because the ‘org’ comes from organization. The first web address didn’t really have anything I saw to suspect or to find a true source.
2) I found the second website very biased. I found the writers tried to push their opinions on me by creating making flyers to pass out at school and having rap lyrics about Martin Luther King. I didn’t really think it used a lot of factual evidence but I thought the other two did.
3) I think I would use the first one as my primary source and use the third one as my secondary source only because Wikipedia can be changed by anyone. I think it would be easy to use and find information on. I would read the information on both websites, distinguish the same or similar facts and then would re-search the different facts and see which one was most common between other pages.
4) Media literacy is so important during these current times because as technology grows, so does our knowledge to use it. A lot more people are able to make their own websites and post what they want and can even alter the pages of others. thought it might sound right, it may only be because they are using complex language that no one understands. :) It is also very important because people have become a lot more outspoken and the media is a great place to speak their mind. We have to always remember when reading things on the internet to check the source and make sure it is ligitimate.
Assignment #1
From what I have read, my understanding of critical consciousness is when you are able to identify social, political and ecomomic oppression and being able to take action against these oppressive actions and/or elements. This concept focuses on achieving an understanding of the world.
I think it is right for children in a developed world to creat a critical conscious so they have the chance to realize and understand how lucky they really do have things even if at different times in your life it may not seem that way. Also, it may help them realize that they do need to step up and not only help thoes in their community have a better life but also help thoes in developing countries. By having this consious in place, children have to really think what is important to them and what they need to survive. I also think this aspect would make children more aware and grateful for the simple things they do have in their life; running water, food, the chance to go to school… I also think it is important to have a critical conscious in developing countries so that children have the courage to step up and fight for what they believe in. It gives children the opportunity to make their lives better with surroundings that may make it tough. Also, even though it may take a while, it gives children the chance to take a leadership role in their community or just within their family to make their lives better by branching away from the oppressive elements and standing up for what is right.
I think creating a social conscuious within ourselves makes us more aware of peoples needs and also that not everyone may not have the life I live. I think it helps us lean towards the positive aspects in life instead of always turning to the negative. If everyone created a social consious, I believe that everyone would be happier because you care how you are treating and helping others but also care how you are being treated and helped. I think the world would get more done and have a lot more developed countries because people would want to help make a difference in others lives.
In the end, I think if everyone had a critical conscious, the world would be a better, happier place because everyone would be more aware of their surroundings.
